STRATEGY FOR BURMA

STRATEGY

Have we not men with us royal,

Men the masters of things? …

I have continually had a feeling of growing up, and that feeling is still with me and gives a zest to my activities as well as to the reading of books and generally makes life worth while.

I was particularly interested in directing people’s attention to social and economic changes.

The only real tragedy in life as Bernard Shaw has written, is the being used by personally minded men for purpose, which you know to be base. All the rest is at the worst mere misfortune and mortality: this alone is misery, slavery, and hell on earth.

The whole of Burmese tradition is warped by the vicious assumption that each generation will substantially live amid the conditions governing the lives of its fathers, and will transmit those conditions to mould with equal force the lives of its children. We are living in the first period of human history for which the assumption is false.

In considering a method for changing the existing order we have to weight the costs of it in material as well as spiritual terms. We cannot afford to be too shortsighted. We have to see how far it helps ultimately in the development of human happiness and human progress, material and spiritual. But we have always to bear in mind the terrible costs of not changing the existing order, of carrying on as we do today with or enormous burden of frustrated and distorted lives, starvation and misery and spiritual and moral degradation. Like an overwhelming and carrying away to destruction vast numbers of human beings. We cannot check the flood or save these people by some of us carrying water away in a bucket. Embankments have to be built and canals, and the destructive power of the waters has to be converted and used for human betterment.

I do not think it is very difficult to convert the masses to social reform if the state takes the matter in hand. But alien rulers are always suspect, and they cannot go far in the process of conversion. If the alien element was removed and economic changes were given precedence, an energetic administration could easily introduce far reaching social reforms.

I would say that my quarrel is with a system and not with individuals. A system is certainly embodied to a great extent in individuals and groups, and these individuals and groups have to be converted or combated. But if a system has ceased to be of value and is a drag, it has to go and the classes or groups that cling to it will also have to undergo a transformation. That process of change should involve, as little suffering as possible, but unhappily suffering and dislocation are inevitable. We cannot put up with a major evil for fear of a far lesser one, which in any event is beyond our power to remedy.

Every type of human association- political, social or economic has some philosophy at the back of it. When these associations changes this philosophical foundation must also change in order to fit in with it and to utilize it to the best advantage.

Our final aim can only be a society with equal economic justice and opportunity for all, a society organized on a planning basis for the raising of mankind to higher material and cultured levels, to a cultivation of spiritual values, of co-operation, unselfishness, the spirit of service, the desire to do right, goodwill and love-ultimately a word order. Everything that comes in the way will have to remove, gently if possible, forcibly if necessary. And there seems to be little doubt that coercion will often be necessary. But if forced is used it should not be in the spirit of hatred or cruelty, but with the dispassionate desire to remove and obstruction. That will be difficult. It is not an easy task; there is no easy way, and the pitfalls are numerous.

Technical Part

If you want to take it up, you must be prepared to lose everything, and you must subject yourself to the strictest non-violence and discipline. When war is declared martial law prevails, and in our non-violent struggle there will also have be dictatorship and martial law on our side, if we are to win. You have energy right to kick me out, to demand my head, or to punish me whenever and howsoever you choose. But so long as you choose to keep me as your leader you must accept my conditions, you must accept dictatorship and the discipline of martial law. But that dictatorship will always be subject to your good will and to your acceptance and to your co- operation. The moment you have had enough of me, throw me out, trample upon me, and I shall not complain.

In a famous article “ The Doctrine of the sword”, Gandhi had written in 1920, but I change India place to Burma. “ I do believe that when there is only choice between cowardice and violence, I would advise violence…. I would rather have Burma resort to arms in order to defend her honor that that she should in cowardly manner become or remain a helpless victim to her own dishonor. But I believe that non-violence is infinitely superior to violence, forgiveness is more, manly than punishment. Forgiveness adorns a soldier. But abstinence is forgiveness only when there is power to punish; it is meaningless when it pretends to proceed from a helpless creature. A mouse hardly forgives a cat when it allows itself to be torn to pieces by her… But I do not believe Burma to be helpless. I do not believe myself to be helpless creature. Let me not be misunderstood. Strength does not come from physical capacity. It comes from an indomitable will…

I am not visionary. I claim to be practical idealist. The religion of non-violence is not meant merely for the Monks and saints. It is meant for the common people as well. Non-violence is the law of our species as violence is the law of the brute. The sprit lies dormant in the brute and he knows no law but that of physical might. The dignity of man requires obedience to a higher law to the strength of the spirit. Courage is the one sure foundation of character, without courage there is no morality, no religion, no love. One cannot follow truth or love so long as one is subject to fear. Cowardice is a thing even more hateful than violence. And discipline is the pledge and guarantee that a man means business. There is no deliverance and no hope without sacrifice, discipline, and self-control. Mere sacrifice without discipline will be unavailing. Words only and pious phrases perhaps, rather platitudinous, but there was power behind the words, and history knew that this little man meant business.

If at first you don’t succeed, cry again.

Modern definition of faith: to believe in something which your reason tells you cannot be true, for if your reason approved of it there could be no question of blind faith. I am not agree with this definition. Buddhism is influence in my life. Because of faith is essential important for human being. Do not simply believe what you hear just because of you have heard it for a long time. Believe nothing on the faith of traditions, even though they have been held in honour for many generations and diverse places. Do not believe a thing because many people speak of it do not confirm anything just because it agrees with your scriptures. Do not fooled by outward appearances. Do not believe what you yourself have imagined, persuading yourself that a god inspires you. Do not accept as fact anything that you yourself find to be logical. Believe nothing on the sole authority of your masters and priests. But whatever, after due examination and analysis, you find to be kind, conducive to the good, the benefit, the welfare of all beings- that doctrine believe and cling to, and take it as your guide.(Buddha).

The article was created during a particularly distressful period of my existence.

Burma Current atmospher

I have tried to follow superficial development in the Burma political scene, but I cannot help feeling that they are unreal, and the backbone in Burma oppress me. The background is one of continual repression of every kind of freedom, of enormous suffering and frustration, of distortion of goodwill, and encouragement of many evil tendencies. Large numbers lie in prison and spend their young lives, year after year, eating their hearts out. Their families and friends and connections and thousands of others grow bitter and a nauseating sense of humiliation and powerlessness before brute strength takes possessions of them. So I feel it, what is going on in Burma. In this moment I would like to share about their feeling. That’s why I mix the different verse poet in one poem. I feel sorry could not mention poet writer name. I am very difficult to think title of following poem. Reader should give the title of poem.

Upon that little tent of blue
Which prisoners call the sky,
And at every drifting cloud that went
With sails of silver by.

Flocks of birds have flown high and away;
A solitary drift of cloud, too, has gone, wandering on.
And I sit alone with Ching-ting Peak, towering beyond.
We never grow tired of each other, the mountain and I .

This is the way the world ends,
Not with a bang, but a whimper.

When all its work is done, the lie shall rot;
The truth is great and shall prevail,
When none cares whether it prevails or not.

For from one cause of fear I am most free,
It is impossible to ravish me,
I am so willing.

Wandering between two worlds, one dead,
The other powerless to be born,
With nowhere yet to rest his head.

The time is out of joint. O curse spite!
That ever I was born to set it right.

To see a world in a Grain of Sand
And a heaven in a wild flower,
Hold infinity in the palm of your hand
And eternity in an hour.
They praise the firm restraint with which you write.
I’m with you there, of course.
You use the snaffle and the curb all right,
But where’s the bloody horse?

Bowed by the weight of centuries he leans
Upon his hoe and gazes on the ground,
The emptiness of ages on his face,
And on his back the burden of the world.

Through this dread shape the suffering ages look.
Time’s tragedy is in that aching stoop,
Through this dread shape humanity betrayed,
Plundered, profaned and disinherited,
Cries protest to the powers that made the world,
A protest that is also prophecy.

Thou art indeed just, Lord, if I contend
With thee; but, sir, so what I plead is just.
Why do sinners’ ways prosper? And why must
Disappointment all I endeavour end?
Wert thou my enemy, O thou my friend,
How wouldst thou worse, I wonder, than thou dost
Defeat, thwart me? Oh, the sots and thralls of lust
Do in spare hours more thrive than I that spend,
Sir, life upon thy cause…..

When the stars threw down their spears
And water’d heaven with their tears,
Dare he laugh his work to see?
Dare he who made the lamb make thee?

Already how am I so far
Out of that minute? Must I go
Still like the thistle ball, no bar,
Onward wherever light winds blow,
Fixed by no friendly star?

And I yearn to lay my head
Where the grass is cool and sweet.
Mother, all the dreams are fled
From the tired child at thy feet.

Who made him dead to rapture and despair,
A thing that grieves not and that never hopes,
Stolid and stunned, a brother to the ox?

The time has come for the people of Burma to choose between a revolutionary outlook, which involved radical changes in our political and social structure, and a reformist objective and method.

wise intention and wise reflection

Wise reflection and wise intention

What we face everyday is unpredictable. Things happen due to multiple causes and conditions as we are living in a conditional and impermanent world. We sometimes invest so much of ourselves in a project that when it doesn’t turn out as it should we became irate. All should point to an expectation, a prediction for the future. We might have realized by now that the future is uncertain, unpredictable. Relying too much on an expectation for the future, should is asking for trouble.
Current my experience teaches me true about this point. I invest so much for exam. All of my time is reading and writing but examination intimation slip is not arriving. So how can I go to the examination room? I check my exam application submit April first week, either I check Internet web. I feel depress, anxiety and frustrate. I don’t want to study anymore even I don’t want to look this book. When I realize that there is nowhere else to go, I face the problem rather than running away. Most problems have solutions that we can’t see when we’re running in the other direction. I made decision. I should wait for December.
In this consequence, how I live in meaningfully in my life. Dr Rahul Nomis Suggestion is “ We are all here for a single purpose: to grow in wisdom and to learn to love better, we can do this through losing as well as through winning, by having and by not having, by succeeding or by failing. All we need to do is to show up openhearted for class. So fulfilling life’s purpose may depend more on how we play than on what we can deal it with.”
My conclusion is Buddha said “ Yonisa Manasikara” Which has been translated as wise reflection and wise intention. It mean purification of mind, overcoming sorrow and lamentation, overcoming pain and grief, treading the right path leading to attainment of eternal peace and attaining happiness by following that path. This wise intention and wise reflection leads to true meaning of life.

freedom

Freedom

I am searching about freedom. When I was adult hood to until now. Freedom is my mission target. I am working for freedom. I really dug in, trying to learn about it much more deeply. I searched freedom in book, experience and India and Thailand in 1998 to 2003. I didn’t get it. Now I understand a little bit so I have been trying to tell about freedom.
There are two kinds of freedom to be found in our world: freedom of desires and the freedom from desires. Modern Western culture only recognizes the first of these, freedom of desires. It then worships such a freedom by enshrine it at the forefront of national constitutions and bills of human right .The underlying creed of most western democracies is to protect their people’s freedom to realize their desires, as far as this is possible. It is remarkable that in such countries people do not feel very free. The second kind of freedom, freedom from desires, is celebrated only in some religious communities. I t celebrates contentment, peace that is free from desire. Buddhism stand point to freedom as the ultimate goal of realization, that is the freedom from suffering and the freedom from the bonds of suffering.
I have question to my self. I am searching freedom of desires or freedom from desires. That’s is really interesting question isn’t it. I maybe free from the shackle of social repression but I am never truly free from Kammic bondage. It is means freedom of desire. I really don’t want it. What I want freedom from desire. How can I work for that. I know that’s not easy but not too hard. True freedom in Buddhism stand point to appreciate of our kammic make up and to engage ourselves to live a cultivated life that aim to free us from creating future Kammic bondage.
Freedom is being content to be where you are. Prison is want-ing to be somewhere else. The free world is the world experienced by one who is content. The real freedom is freedom from desire, never freedom of desire.

Kamma. Volitional action, considered particularly as a moral force capable of producing, for the agent, results that correspond to the ethical quality of the action; thus good kamma produces happiness and Bad Kamma produces suffering.

Essential in life

What Is Essential
by Rajiv Chowdhury

All Human being are part of society and everyone in society has different desire, social role and duties. While performing his role and duties, individual faces many problem in one or other form, which hinder his performance as a social being. Over the year global socities have witness shift in life patten. Redical changes are being brought into life, lifestyle so called through progress and reform. The recent phenomenon of globalization and consumerism have created diversity of life style and illusion of essential requirment of human being meaning of existence. Along with these changes social problem and personal diffcult continue to increase and multiply.I would like to examine essential desire of human being and personility.
Human being has a number of essential need, requirment for satisfaction. If these need are not fulfilled it may result is frustation followed by crisis.Problem due to non fullfillment or inability to perform his social role problem of social function cause distress to the individual.Id is present at the time of birth. It doesn't know any morality or reality. It is concerned only with satifaction of its wishes. It is guided by the pleasure principle. The pursue of sensual happiness in sensual pleasure. It occur to life of existence, clinging, craving feeling and contact, the governing makes the entire process a lawful on is forced called Kamma. It refer to violitional action.Such violation come to express outward through manifest bodily and verbal action consiedered particular as a moral force capable of producing for the agent result that correspond to the ethical quality of the action.
All human behaviour is the result of interaction between the biological organism and its enviroment. Therefore all human being physiological need such as food,Shelter, cloth , air and water. The nature of human being like to be on the safer side and avoid physical damage and hazardous.Ego function as the manager of personality. It obey the principle of reality. It control select and decide what insticts of the Id are to be satisfied and what manner it can be done. That's why every human being need for belongingness and love such as love to belong a particular group and with the prestige in that group. So second process of essential requirment is craving for existence of self lead to esteem need.It is general psychology of human being that it like to be at the top position to have status in the society and acceptance in his own group.
Human behaviour can be understood only in term of one own emotional and intellectual comprehension. There are important differentes between individual and they must be recognized and allowed for. At certain period of human life, super ego work on morality principle. It represents the value of society.Human personality is the result of the interaction among the syste. The presence of a powerful ego ensures a well balanced personality. The dominance of super ego lead to a neurotic personality while supremacy Id over ego and super ego ends up in the development of delinque personality.Need for self growth and identification available to a person for self growth and to prove his capabilities for his remarkable identification. On the other hand application to Dhamma in way of life. The Dhamma in its brodest sense is the imment invariable order of the universe in which truth, lawful regularity and virtue are inextically merged. This cosmic Dhamma is reflected is the human mind as the aspiration for truth spirtual beauty and goodness; it is express in human conduct as wholesome bodily, verbal and mental action. The Dhamma has institution embodiment as well as expression in the live of individual who look it as their source of guidence in the proper conduct of life.
The final stage of human need for cognitive understanding of self and the world around him,it is said that all his/her needs are fulfilled. It is the top most need in the need hirechy, which governs the person at spirituality and very few person achieve it. Human suffering is undesirable and should be allevitaed. The last stage human essential is liberation. It has refers to who has elimanated all defilement and attain full liberation is this life.Different culture and religion use different word form. The final goal of Buddha teaching the unconditional state beyond the round of birth.
Human motivation is complex and frequently obsvure. Each individual by the very fact of his/her existence of worth. Every individul survive for craving for essential such requirment.we have strong desire will coming tomorro of future achieve in the way of life. There are common human needs for growth and development of individual. Each individual is like all other human being in some aspect and like no other individual.Every individual has within him/her , the potential form this is follow that people has capacity to change.Society has an obligation to help those who do not have the means for the realization of their potential.
